Packing List
|
|
Below is a packing list for the trip. It is meant to give ideas on what to
bring. As we don't have much room in the support vehicle, we all need to pack
as light as possible.
|
|
Luggage
|
|
Support has asked that everyone avoid big pieces of luggage. If possible, try
to have several smaller pieces. Smaller pieces are easier to carry and to pack
in the support vehicle. Backpacks or duffel bags work the best. Luggage with
wheels is nice if you are always on nice and smooth paths and have elevators.
This will not be the case for most places, so support prefers backpacks and
shoulder straps over a suitcase with wheels.
|
|
Clothes (somewhat a generic list)
|
Non-riding clothes (about two outfits, make sure one is slightly nice)
Riding clothes (go for layers as it could be cooler some days)
Rain Gear (make sure it is warm because horizontal rain sucks)
Sleeping clothes
Swimming suit
Sweatshirts
Towel for showers (what works well is a quick drying towel, one that folds up
into a small ball)
|
|
Miscellaneous Stuff
|
|
Books (1-2 books/person, you can always read books that others brought)
CamelBak
Camera
Compass
Electric Plug Adaptor (if you are going to bring any electronics that need to
be plugged in, make sure you bring an adaptor.)
German/French phrase book
Gloves
Helmet (if you wear one)
Hostel Card
Lip Balm
Lotion
Map of Switzerland (this is the map that was sent to you)
Passport
Photocopies of all important documents (including medical documents) that you
will take with. One set of copies stays at home. It is also a good idea to give
a set to support.
Shoes - riding
Shoes/sandals for leisure
Small pack of facial tissue
Soap/Shampoo/Conditioner (bring only what you are going to use and not the full
bottle, or bring two smaller bottles so you can throw away one set)
Spoon/Fork/Knife (nice to be able to eat that yogurt you just bought!)
Sunglasses
Toothpaste/Toothbrush/Floss
Watch
Web Page Route
Web Page Lodging (this would be essential to know where you are staying each
night)
Zip Lock baggies
|
|
Money
|
Cash (Bring some cash, just in case you can’t use the travelers checks or
credit card)
Credit Card/Debit Card (this can be one of the easier ways to get local
currency, check ahead of time to see which of your cards gives you the best
out-of-country rates for currency and withdrawls)
Travelers Checks
|
|
Medical stuff
|
|
Most of the below can be purchased while on the tour. Bring only those medical
items you know you will need on the tour.
Ankle brace
Antispectic
Anti-itch cream (for bug bites)
Aspirin/Ibuprofen
Band-Aids
Band-Aid/Neosporin/Mycetracin
Bug spray
Knee brace
Imodium AD (well, you know)
Sunscreen (at higher elevations it is even more important)
Sun burn cream (when you didn't put enough sunscreen on)
Wraps (to wrap up a wrist or ankles)
Wrist guards (nice to have in case you have a bad fall and need to immobilize
the wrist)
|
|
Tools
|
|
Think about seeing who you can share these items with. We don't need 10 Allen
wrenches, although more than one is good.
Allen wrenches (for frame and seat)
Duct Tape (what works well is to wrap duct tape around a pen/pencil)
Leatherman or equivalent (this has assorted tools/knifes that are useful in
many different situations)
Patch Kit
Pedal wrench
Spoke wrench (Coker’s take special spoke wrenches.)
Tire Irons (to remove the tire)
Wrench to adjust brake (it would be really annoying to have the brake stuck in
the 'on' position and have no tools to adjust it)
Zip ties (for the cycle computer or for anything else that needs to be taken
care of)

Things not to bring
|
Laundry Detergent (this will be supplied by the group fund)
Hard case luggage (way too hard to pack into the support vehicle)
Tents (there is no plan for any camping)
'Dry Clean Only' clothes (I don't think we will have access to many places that
handle dry cleaning)
Food for yourself and your extended family for 3 months (they do have grocery
stores in Europe)
Jeans (unless they can double for riding pants and/or a ‘nice’ outfit)
Your breakable one-of-a-kind glassware (because support will most likely break
it)
